Suggested Materials Needed for Kathy Hill’s Watercolor classes and workshops

PAINTS: Grumbacher Academy or Winton brands are recommended for beginners. Other good brands are Sennilier, Holbein, Winsor Newton. Avoid Japenese sets–the colors don’t match and there isn’t much in the tube. Yarka OK.

Tubes in the following colors :

3 BLUES: THALO BLUE (Phthalo, Winsor Blue-green shade OK),PRUSSIAN BLUE, ULTRAMARINE BLUE (or Colbalt blue)

2 REDS:  THALO RED (Rose Madder, Alizarin Crimson OK), CADMIUM RED LIGHT or Vermillion

2 YELLOWS: CADMIUM YELLOW MEDIUM  and LEMON YELLOW

1 GREEN: HOOKER’S GREEN DEEP

YELLOW OCHRE,  BURNT SIENNA

PAYNE’S GREY or INDIGO BLUE,     SEPIA

PURPLE,       ORANGE

Chinese White or Permanent White Gouache

BRUSHES: #4 round, #8 or #10 round with good points, 1” flat for washes.  Soft brushes, not stiff bristles.  Synthetics are fine. Additional optional brushes: #1 or #2 round or liner; #6 round.

PAPER: 140lb cold press. Tablet OK at least 11” x 14”.  Recommend Arches,  Portofino, Strathmore 300 or 400 series OK. Avoid anything of less quality. It will discourage you.

OTHER SUPPLIES: Liquid Mask (frisket), rubber cement pickup,  and a cheap small brush, Masking tape, board to tape paper to, palette (any clean white surface that won’t absorb water), paper towels, kleenex,  pencil and eraser (kneaded erasers are best), scissors,  scratch paper, reference photos & ideas.
